while in chicago on north clark street we saw a graveyard where all the statues faces were covered. Why?

Question by baby l: while in chicago on north clark street we saw a graveyard where all the statues faces were covered. Why?
the tombstones all had statues and they were carved with there faces “covered” with some type of cloth. So no faces just carving of a flowy fabric. It was super creepy and beautiful. Is this part of some type of religious burial? I cant seem to find any info!
