How long will my licence be held by the DMV for not paying my insurance?

Question by morry: How long will my licence be held by the DMV for not paying my insurance?
I forgot to pay my insurance, and the insurance company told me that there is a huge fine for that, but to avoid the fine i must surrender my license plates. How long will that be, the insurance was due march 20th and its may 8th. I live in New York.

I have never figured out how people “forget” to pay insurance, renew their licence, etc. How do people make it through life being so blase about important things? As an insurance broker I have seen people burned out of their homes, and afterward asking for help because they “forgot” to pay insurance and now had nothing. I have seen people get in serious accidents, then get sued by the other driver ask “how can he sue me I forgot to pay my insurance”.

From the NYSDMV: “If you had a lapse in your insurance coverage and did not surrender your vehicle plates immediately, your registration is suspended for the same number of days that you did not have insurance coverage,”
“You are not required to surrender your vehicle plates for a suspension of 90 days or shorter if you pay a civil penalty.”
    “The civil penalty amount is:
$ 8 per day for each day of the lapse from day 1 through day 30, and
$ 10 per day for each day of the lapse from day 31 through day 60, and
$ 12 per day for each day of the lapse from day 61 through day 90.”
