will it be possible, someday, to “capture” a smell?

Question by Rick C: will it be possible, someday, to “capture” a smell?
I am sure that with technology so awesome these days, that they will be able to “capture” a smell. Let’s say you’re in the Rainforest of Brazil, and you see a unique flower or plant, that you never have seen, and would never see outside of the Rainforest. You can perhaps one day “capture” the scent from it. Anyone think this will ever happen?

Quite likely. I read about an Israeli company a few years ago that was designing a computer peripheral that used the idea that scents are made up of fundamental, basic components. Similar to how any color can be created solely from different combinations of red, green and blue. This peripheral had various oils through which is blew air in varying quantities, thus creating scent mixtures. It doesn’t sound like a stretch to imagine some sort of electronic sniffer that analyzes the fundamentals of whatever scent is wafting through, records the data, and then feeds the data back into one of these peripherals for “play back”.
