I read it in a short story by Melanie Tem, “The Dollmaker”, in which she refers to a row of houses which are “crackerboxes from the fifties”?

The reference is to the economic boom in housing after soldiers returning from WWII. There were developments of hundreds of thousand houses in every city built with 2 or 3 different outside cosmetic changes – steps on different side, porch, entrance way etc. Otherwise the exact same house – street after street.

These are cheaply constructed one story ranch style homes built by the thousands by real estate developers. They look just like a double wide trailer.
