Microsoft Office for the Mac *IS* the mac equivalent to Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel.
However, Apple’s Pages is a word processor that will read and write Word document, and Apples Numbers is a spread sheet application that will read and write Excel documents.
Free office is another option for reading and writing Office documents.

Apple does make an iWork package that is similar to Microsoft Office. What I would suggest, however is to try NeoOffice for free first. It’s a full office suite that also will open and SAVE in Microsoft Office format if you choose. I’ve opened Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with it. It really is a great piece of software.
iWork is also good, but I’ve heard that some parts are better than others. Keynote (equivalent to PowerPoint) is supposed to be terrific. My advice would be to try NeoOffice first, and if you’re not happy with it… who cares because it was free.
You can always buy iWork or Microsoft Office for Mac later.
There is a version of MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint available for Mac. In fact, it’s slightly newer then the Windows equivalent (Macs have Office 2008 available, PCs have Office 2007).
Also, you can go to http://www.neooffice.org – that is a free office suite that can do everything word/powerpoint can do for macs.
iWork is Apple’s version of Microsoft Office. As the other answer mentioned, it has a word processor program and spreadsheet. It also has Keynote – its presentation software. It has some amazing features that just blow PowerPoint out of the water. But PowerPoint has some text and object formatting that will leave Keynote crying.
Take a look http://www.apple.com/iwork/
There is a 30 day free trial and the full package is $ 79.
